Our college held the 2024 PhD dissertation defense of Guangxi University

On May 22, Han Minwei, a PhD student attended the 2024 PhD dissertation defense of Guangxi University. The Chairman of the defense committee is Professor Zeng Yongping from South China University of Technology, and the other defense members includes Professor Wu Zhiqiang (Guilin University of Technology), Researcher Xu Xiangrong (the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS), Researcher Dan Li (Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS), Professor Hu Baoqing (Nanning Normal University), and Professor He Zhengguo (Guangxi University).

According to the agenda, Han Minwei reported his dissertation titled "Environmental behavior, source-sink mechanism and ecological impact of PAHs in coral reef ecosystem of the SCS". He systematically explained the background and significance, research foundation and research gap between China and abroad, and scientific problems he solved. He demonstrated the research work and results carried out during his master's and doctoral studies.

The defense committee members listened carefully to Han Minwei's report, asked questions, exchanged views and made suggestions on the relevant contents of the thesis. Han Minwei answered and provided additional information as needed. The Defense Committee believes that Han Minwei’s research topic is novel, with clear research objectives, rich content, solid theoretical foundations, rigorous design and objective and detailed data. They acknowledged his significant achievements during his degree studies and confirmed he had successfully completed the requirements of PhD study plan. The defense agenda was rigorous and standardized. At the same time, faculty and students of the college also came to the scene to observe and engage in discussions, which demonstrated the excellent academic atmosphere of our organization.

Since its establishment in 2014, the college has graduated 8 batches of PhD students. Since Han Minwei entered the Guanxi University, he has published 7 SCI papers as the first author, including 4 papers in SCI Q1 journals (1 cover article, top), 1 paper in SCI Q2 journal (top), and 1 paper papers in SCI Q2 and Q3 journals. During graduate studies, Dr. Han Minwei participated in 16 comprehensive marine scientific expeditions, totaling 312 days and over 10,000 nautical miles voyage. These expeditions covered Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, the Xisha Islands and Zhongsha Islands in the SCS, the Taiwan Strait, the East China Sea, the Yellow Sea, the Strait of Malacca, the Equator waters, and the Eastern Indian Ocean. He obtained more than 740 samples and 12 sets of hydrological and meteorological observation data. In addition, Han Minwei has won 21 individual awards and honors, as well as 3 collective titles, including the National Scholarship for Doctoral Students, the Baogang Scholarship, the Guangxi University President Scholarship, Outstanding Graduates of Guangxi University, "Tao Jianming Scholarship" of Guangxi University, Outstanding Student of Guangxi University and Outstanding Student Leader of Guangxi University. This successful completion of the PhD dissertation defense again demonstrated the School of Marine Sciences 's capabilities in talent cultivation, showcased the high-level research excellence and also laid a stronger foundation and set higher goals for the future graduates training.
