Our College Organized a series of activities for the "2024 World Oceans Day”

June 8, 2024 is the 16th "World Oceans Day" and the 17th "National Marine Billboard Day". To enhance the public's understanding of the ocean and raise public awareness of Ocean Protection, our college, in conjunction with the Oceanic Administration of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangxi Radio and Television Station and other units, organization 8 large-scale marine knowledge and science popularization activities from June 3 to 22, with a total of more than 2,000 participants.

On June 3, Liu Qiyang (Vice-Dean) and Li Zhoujia (Executive Deputy Director of the Marine Science and Education Museum), together with the college's "Blue Dream·Science Popularization First" science popularization volunteer team to Xinghu Road Primary School in Nanning. They conducted an ideological and political education course about marine popularization for the students, theme of "Seeking national prosperity and strength from the ocean, Pursuing the Blue Dream". Combination of science education and ideological and political education have injected new vitality into marine science popularization education and inspired students' enthusiasm to explore, understand and protect the ocean.

On June 7, the "Guangxi Marine Mobile Museum" series of campus activities was launched at the Guangxi Natural Resources Museum, jointly sponsored by the Oceanic Administration of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangxi Academy of Sciences and Guangxi University, and co-organized by the Natural Resources Museum of Guangxi, School of Marine Sciences at Guangxi University and Guangxi Radio and Television Station Mobile Digital TV Channel. Liang Enwei (Member of the Standing CPC and Vice President of Guangxi University), attended and delivered a speech. Qin Huadong (Secretary of Party Committee of College), Wang Rui (Vice-Dean), Huang Xueyong (Secretary of Youth League Committee of College) and representatives of undergraduate and graduate students attended the event. At the event, Guangxi University and the Natural History Museum of Guangxi signed a cooperation agreement on Industry-University-Research, and held a plaque awarding ceremony for Scientific Research and Practice Base. Additionally, our college donated samples from the Xisha Islands in the SCS to the Natural Resources Museum of Guangxi to help enrich science popularization education. After the launching ceremony, our college’s Coral Reef Protection and Restoration Innovation Team set up an exhibition area at Nanning Beifu Experiential School. They conducted science popularization activities on coral reef knowledge, which attracted enthusiastic participation of many students.

On June 7, the 2024 "World Oceans Day and National Marine Billboard Day" series of activities with theme "New Depth Awaken to Reappearance Coral Sea" were held at the South Bay Marine-Sports-Base on Weizhou Island and the coral reef restoration area on the north of island. That event was hosted by Guangxi University and Oceanic Administration of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, organized by School of Marine Sciences at Guangxi University, Guangxi Laboratory on the Study of Coral Reef in the SCS and the Management Committee of Weizhou Island Tourist Attraction, Beihai. Huang Wen, Director of the Coral Reef Museum on Weizhou island of the School of Marine Sciences at Guangxi University, attended the event and introduced the remarkable achievements of our team on coral reef protection and restoration, marine environmental monitoring etc. In addition, our college has also launched "Adopt a Coral" activity. Through coral adoption, participants had the opportunity to personally experience the importance of coral protection, enhanced their awareness and sense of responsibility towards marine ecological conservation, promoted coral conservation efforts and public engagement.

On the morning of June 7, a group of 18 teachers and students from the Geography Course Base of Qingshan Campus of Nanning No. 3 Middle School came to the Marine Science and Education Museum of Guangxi University for a study visit. Executive Deputy Director Li Zhoujia delivered a welcome speech to the visiting teachers and students. He delivered an ideological and political education “Museum and Course Integration” course with theme of "Seeking national prosperity and strength from the ocean, Pursuing the Blue Dream", from the perspective of marine ecology and national security, combined with the distinctive research of our college.

On June 8, our college held a science popularization activity with theme of "Protect Marine Ecosystem, Harmonious Co-existence between Humans and Nature" at the Marine Science and Education Museum, and invited children from the No.1 Kindergarten of Guangxi University to participate. Assoc. Prof. Huang Rongyong (Asst. Dean), Huang Xueyong (Secretary of Youth League Committee of College), and Assoc. Prof. Wang Guanghua (Department of Marine Biology and Ecology) attended the event. Teacher Huang Xueyong explained marine knowledge to the children in detail. His explanation sparked their curiosity about the coral world. They carefully followed his rhythm to understand the coral reef ecosystem step by step, and quietly ignited their dreams of marine science while exploring the mysteries of the ocean together.

On June 15 and 22, the college held the "Open Day" activity at the Marine Science and Education Museum  of Guangxi University. The museum was open to the public for free and offered educational public welfare marine science lectures with total of more than 300 people visited on that day.

The series of activities for the "World Oceans Day”activities have aroused widespread attention from the society. So far, more than 10 media have reported it, including ChinaNews, People Daily, China Education News Network, China Youth Daily, Guangxi TV, Nanfang Morning Post, and China News Service Guangxi. The total number of reports has exceeded 30 times with views exceeded 600,000 times. Discussions on Weibo with World Oceans Day as the keyword, have surpassed 4 million, with over 6 million interactions. The World Oceans Day series activities effectively popularized marine knowledge to the public, raised awareness about Marine Conservation and enhanced the public marine awareness and wisdom of harmonious co-existence between humans and nature.
